To better understand who we are and what we are trying to achieve. Here is an overview:
Who is MANCOR?
This undertaking began as an NGO of which my father was Chairman – Technical Assistance for the Development of the Rural and Urban Poor (TACDRUP) advocating organic farming tiedup to a farmer’s cooperative; but due to heavy losses incurred over the years, ownership of the post-harvest facility was transferred to TRC, through a dacion en pago arrangement. Due to my father’s desire to help workers in TACDRUP keep their jobs, he set-up MANCOR to continue operations and sustain the advocacy to help local farmers and their families. This was in 2001.
In 2008, my mother – the current General Manager (a former bank executive), and two admin staff took over the previous management. I was asked by my mother to move back to Davao from Manila in August 2009 to help the reorganized company. With our new team – together with my wife’s inputs (girlfriend at that time), we developed the Sun Made Brand and launched it in early 2010 in Davao. Sun Made broke through the Metro Manila market in July of the same year. (Please see attached one-pager on Sun Made)
Initiatives to directly help farmers was conceived in 2013 where organic farming is incentivized –
to provide the raw material needed to produce high-quality, organically grown Sun Made rice
What We Do
We support local farmers and their families through regular purchase of their “palay”. We also provide an avenue to sustainably increase their household income by hiring the wives and daughters of the farmers as sorters and packers of our finished products – Sun Made Brown Rice and Well-Milled Rice. We also encourage farmers to practice organic farming, which is the main source of our brown rice product.
Our goal is to be the first name when it comes to high quality, locally-grown rice and eventually offer other agricultural products under the Sun Made brand as well as help other farm communities in Mindanao.
This social endeavour is relevant to job creation and opportunities for families to lead better lives; ensuring farmers’ households have the capacity to gain sustainable and regular income. We provide direct access to the market by converting farmers’ palay into high-quality rice.
We created the MAF (MANCOR Assisted Farms) program – to help and guide farmers to practice organic farming. As an incentive, we buy their palay higher than market per-kilo price, to encourage them to practice organic farming and provide the raw material needed to produce high-quality, organically grown rice so that MANCOR/Sun Made can better compete in today’s market. We also empower women by giving them a venue to cultivate their skills by working with us and earning additional income for their families.
MANCOR has a golden opportunity to succeed in marrying private and public interest by making business and farmers’ mutually-dependent in achieving inclusive growth. This is one reason why MANCOR is bent on increasing its online presence to reach out to a wider market. Market demand is increasing every year which means that we will be able to help more farmers and their families as business grows.
MANCOR, through Sun Made, has penetrated the mainstream market such as supermarkets (Davao, Metro Manila, Cebu, CDO, Gen San) and end-users such as McDonald’s in Davao (13 branches). Sales are steadily increasing every year and other supermarket and restaurant chains have opened their doors to MANCOR but we are unable to close the deal because we cannot commit enough supply.
The only way to establish Sun Made as top of mind is to ensure that we have steady supply of FRESH, high quality palay that we can produce into high quality rice. The main selling point of Sun Made is Freshly-Milled, Local/Locally-Produced Rice.
As our company and brand grows, our farmer-partners and their families’ incomes and well-being shall grow too. We intend for our company, MANCOR, to become successful and Sun Made to become one of the leading Agri-products available in the market. It is very important for us to be a responsible and equitable business by giving back to the local community and help improve the local rice industry.
We are working very hard to expand our farming initiatives, increase productivity, and help ensure that this long-term endeavor will have continuous direct and lasting positive effects on all stakeholders: from the farm, to mill, to market and back to farmers’ households.
